formless by justin simoni
Formless is the product of a few html experiments I did between attending Woodstock '99 and moving to Colorado to attend school. It was started just about one year after I got into creating content for the internet. This is what came out of my head after reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac and Programming Perl, 2nd Edition by Larry Wall. Worse things could have had happened. I was living with my friend, Ryan, or more correctly, he was living with me and we shot pictures of ourselves one night with b+w film and we thought we were so hip. The rest of the photos in the piece are of my hometown. This project was about me finding who I was at this amazing time in my life where my entire way of everything was to drastically change.
Formless was to have been the first installment of an entire series of experimental projects, so dubbed "strange and twisted" - but lo, s+t #1 is the only to have had come to light. This was mostly because when I moved to Colorado to attend college, my computer didn't quite make the same trip. It came.. eventually - in November actually. I got it back for a month before I got a Macintosh.
I created formless on a Gateway 2000 I received one Christmas with money that was going to go towards a trip to Europe that I opted out of going. I wasn't about to go across an entire ocean if I wasn't going to see Stonehenge. Who knows where I'd be if I didn't have a computer. Probably still in CT in a crappy community college working at a pizza shop. In all seriousness.
I remember how important web design was to me, how sites like swanky.org and halfempty.com were visited by myself every single day to see if anything new was up. The internet seemed so small then. There was Yahoo! There was Wired and there were a few weird artsy sites I went to. Some things don't change much I guess.
This is, I think, the first electronic 'Art' project that I made that was really art, and not just me writing or working in photoshop. Something finally congelled. It's still actually pretty interesting to check out.

Justin lives in Wethersfield, Connecticut but! will be attending the University of Colorado in the Fall since he knows that skateboarding is better out where the states are square and big. He likes this girl named Kelly for taking him to Woodstock and this girl named Jess for all those times in her basement and all those 10 mile skates home at 3 am afterwards.
